I was personally banned from Twitter by Elon Musk for reporting on fascists. I watched them block links to the Elon Jet Tracker.
I have no use for a social media site that censors legitimate reporting, whether it's the Panama Papers or the Snowden leaks or Epstein files or DHS leaks.
My text adventure games bot / C64 emulator bot is now switched off, sorry folks. When they reverse this decision then I'll reverse mine. This was a cool and novel use of ATProto.
For the folks saying "you can just switch to a different AppView" - that's not the point.
The vast majority of people are here on the main app instance and they would ALL have to move in order to bypass the centralized censorship.
What's more, I shouldn't have to. It's not worth it for me.
@chadloder.dev where can we find you when you leave here?
The information you post here is of value to many, myself included, and I would be willing to find it elsewhere.
If you move to the fediverse after this, make sure you bridge back here with @ap.brid.gy
The retrocomputing fediverse will love your bot
You'll be missed, not only for being a person on here that makes honorable decisions.
An understandable decision. Gonna miss ya on the feed, take care!
I mean the fact that they did it is enough to warrant not wanting to provide content for people to remain on the platform. Simple as.
Like they did something to provide cover when they alternative is literally just to do nothing
@chadloder.dev where can we keep up with your work and commentary? Mastodon?
@bsky.app @moderation.bsky.app @safety.bsky.app censoring this reporting was dumb and you should feel dumb
Argh. The out-and-out fascists are bad but it's the bootlickers that are doing the work of shrinking our world. Me, I'm destitute, crippled and housebound, so I have near zero contact beyond socials, .: still shamefully juggling. I'll miss you (and pup) until I find you again elsewhere! Best wishes.
The Atmosphere is explicitly meant to offer alternatives to *centralized censorship* though - see
atmosphereaccount.com
Saying you "shouldn't have to" isn't helpful. People living in war zones and having to leave shouldn't have to do that either.
The point is to have the choice.
What other platform(s) offer such a choice? None.
Because they are centralized by design.
Yes, the majority of people "would ALL have to move in order to bypass the centralized censorship" but it is EXCEEDINGLY easy it is to do that.
Switching "AppViews" is swapping one app download for another
Migrating an account off
bsky.social to e.g.
blacksky.community takes <30* minutes for most and there's 3 nice options to do it:
pdsmoover.com
move.eurosky.tech
move.blacksky.community
*I just migrated from
selfhosted.social to
aster.id, so 30 minutes was bc I was teaching people while migrating
Wish i could tell that to pm seymour. He has a series about "xitposts" and like... dude, I know that Twitter is the only way to talk to YouTube and have a fuckin reach, but like... that site is 30% CSAM (not counting the AI btw) by MASS.
✈️ We're tracking Elon Musk's jet live right now!
https://jets.passaroagencies.com/elon #PrivateJet #AviationI love Masnick & the liberal protocol & the promise of the world wide web. ATproto is trying to build on that.. I dared to hope. Bluesky lets me down with it's centralization. What good is an information network that caves to authoritarian controls? DHS are our own modern paramilitary problem.
How else do they imagine the Germans could resist what happened to them? How else could the Spanish? What a lack of imagination for such crucially important technology during its moment in history. To rise to here & choose to fail. Books & pamplets with baked in censors, made to betray themselves.
Sons of Liberty blocked. Red coats & Loyalists protected. Capitol & colonialism regimes more important than The People.
If they don't want to be resistance information tech, then they're consumer entertainment, not the academic Internet I grew up with.
Get strong or be irrelevant, Bsky.
As of now, nothing has been blocked on my end, but that doesn't matter.
This sort of spineless whitewashing bullshit strikes an old, but particularly raw nerve of mine.
War it is, then. 🏴
bluesky is afraid, of course, with being labeled as a "terrorist" website by trump's goons ... yeah, there's a level of cowardice there, and also self-preservation ...
... can u imagine if bluesky got shut down by the feds?? ... all the anti trump people would be sad af 😆
#fuckice
In all honesty, I have not seen Trump or Vance or anyone else complain about bluesky
Come over to Blacksky. Migration is pretty easy and it's not beholden to Bluesky's greed.
In retrospect we should have created a white sky as a really nice Honeypot for all the maga end up at.
🤣
I can see it now, Kid Schmuck trying to hit on Rowling with shirtless, greasy haired pics while RFK Jr sells whale junk from the back of his van, getting thousands bullet peptide emoji likes from bots.
Beef tallow grifters on every corner.
Couch fuckers as far as the eye can see.
"We'll replace the springs on your old girlfriend! Come down to Cushion Masters, where the sales never end!" as seen on TV ads with unauthorized GenAI Vance waving like a wacky waving tube man.
Every 3rd post is a mandatory reading of a Trump post and unmutable screaming eagle.
This is the honeypot for the non-Maga 🙅♀️
Sad to see you go, but definitely can't blame you for leaving.
This whole thing is yikes.
Even if you do not like the organization that was hacked, hacking is a crime.
Even if the organization that was hacked is evil, unethical, and immoral, in my opinion, the best approach is to vote out every politician who supported evil rather than commit crimes and stoop to their level.
Naive?
Only some hacks are crimes. If you're interesting in protecting yourself from them, consider hiring a hacker.
Never mind the fact that we - and WIRED - *don't know exactly what is in the leak* and it *could put thousands of innocent non-ICE state and contractor employees at risk*
Fucks sake people, rage at Bsky all you like for plenty of other legitimate reasons, but...
Why are they still at DHS two years into Trump II?
You in favour of show trials of civilian collaborators, or just summary justice?
Well, I'm pissed too but, from a legal perspective, I'd like to know what they're opening themselves up to. Like if it's nothing then it's wrong of course. If it's bad potential liability then let's just tell everyone so that Trump's Nazis aren't trying to shut this place down.
Are you on other SM?
Nope, not on any public account that I post on. I'm barely here as it is.
That’s too bad. I check in with your feed often. If you decide to go somewhere, let us know.
Shatter.13 signal because I'm not around anywhere else except discord; but I'm pretty done with that as well.
So where can I find this list then?
So if someone posted links to your, your family and everybody you know personal information, you'd be perfectly OK with it?
Idiot.
I hope you'll reconsider as you'll be badly missed on here..
As far as I can see, eurosky and blacksky are not blocking it, so maybe switch to one of them?
I presume it's because doxxing is against the Terms of Service, but it would be a pity to lose your contributions here - hope you reconsider
It's important to understand that it has nothing to do with any rules that are written. Someone on their team made a decision that it is more profitable to avoid antagonizing the Trump administration unlike protecting marginalized groups from doxxing from kiwifarms or other transphobic bullshit.
If the rules were enforced neutrally (as if such a thing were possible) it would be far less objectionable. Instead, they express a strong ideological bias in who must be appeased and who is protected.
Why is not leaving bluesky for one of the other atproto networks an option? Blacksky is independant from bluesky, eurosky on its way. Others are working on it with their own versions. All are seamlessly interacting. You can let bluesky rot without leaving good things and people behind.
We'll miss you
It is a disturbing move, but it isn't like you can copy/pasta the link into another browser.
Sometimes you just need to go around these people and soldier onward.
We should have changed the wording last night. Changes incoming shortly
For bad grammar at the very least.
Why are you protecting fascists? You realize that the nazis are the *bad* guys, right? That they are not deserving of protection? That they are going to come for you too?
Do you feel any shame for using the passive voice and not stating which section of the Community Guidelines it violates, and how? Do you think you're above ethics just because you can get away with it? Do you feel bad about it but move on? What's it like to be a hatchetman?
Has Bluesky received a court order requiring blocking this link? Is there a specific law that is requiring you to do this? Do government agents have the right to privacy? Do fascist secret police have the right to privacy?
These and many other questions to be left unanswered.
I just want to say that a "Bluesky account" doesn't exist. When you subscribed you created an Atmosphere account on a Bluesky server. This means you can just use another atproto app with your account which doesn't block the link and you can also move your account to another provider.
atstore.fyiIf they're doing this, it kind of gives away everything in the leak is legitimate doesnt it?
the vibes-coded ass blocked page, too lmao
Can we hide it in a regular expression?
Sad to see you go, but understand and respect your decision.
Bluesky mods are fascist collaborators and allow heinous stuff while banned accounts who stand up for trans people.
bsky.app/profile/zapd...This is fucked up.
@joshuajfriedman.com this is a terrible way to lose some of the most important voices here
Lol that person blocked me
I don't mean to be rude here but isn't this exactly the situation the protocol is for? Obviously it's not great that bluesky is the only one but I think you could migrate to another appview pretty easily?
"Isn't this exactly the situation the internet is for? Obviously it's not great that this website is censoring you, but I think you could go to another website pretty easily?"
"And has blocked" they didn't even give it a second look for typos
I know right! We might as well all go back to Twitter at this point.
@bsky.app
Where to?
What's hilarious is how completely ineffective it is as a measure to prevent access to that shit and how arrogant Bluesky is to think they're doing anything other than demonstrating cowardice.
You will definitely be missed very much. ☹️
@antifa.svpn.com
7/10 humans I most love have left Bluesky
Because:
1. It's now run by a rich white male venture capitalist with ties to DHS, Trump, and right-wing networks
2. Worst moderation in the entire history of the Internet
3. Relentless targeted harassment
Are they leaving too?
I just tagged them so they'd see it.
Oh okay.
Do you know if Chad posts somewhere else?
It's gonna really suck if he leaves.
He says he doesn't. I haven't seen any other socials he's on either.
I've never seen a social media company do a slow-burn-suicide like bluesky has been doing recently.
While I agree this is not their job to censor I think the incredibly weak implementation is easy to get round, just add query strings , it feels like it was talked down in a meeting.
I would imagine lawyers probably wanted some way to shield from liability.
By
@jcsalterego.bsky.socialAre you going anywhere so that we can continue to follow your work?
I think we should have an ideologically neutral stance that doxing is bad for all the obvious reasons… if it was all the home addresses of DSA members in Chicago posted online we’d rightly be horrified.
Doxxing is not the same thing as warning someone about known criminals in the area.
This is a shitty take.
Dsa arnt public employees.
This is a straw man argument.
I dunno, government employees working for an agency who is committing illegal actions against American citizens maybe should be held to a higher standard?
I feel like it's been acting this way long enough that if you stayed, or recently joined, you support the creep of fascism and deserve this.
If a right wing hacker put up the home address of hundreds of abortion providers it would be bad and any social media platform would be extremely hesitant to keep that kind of info up.
I agree on the premise of not doxxing random people, just like I agree on the premise of not punching random people.
But I also believe that it is our patriotic duty to punch Nazis, and if you work supporting a bunch of Nazis, then you're a fucking Nazi and deserve the be punched.
Wait, do you think that this leak includes the home addresses of 40,000 DHS employees? Because it doesn't. It includes their work contact information.
Already happening, but you should‘ve checked on that before reflexively defending ICE agents.
now go research the difference between abortion providers and ICE goons. Asshole.
"Doxxing the gestapo is bad"
This is the obviously correct position, and bluesky should block links to other such places like KF or the tpusa db
I actually like it when bad things happen to bad people. I don't like it when bad things happen to good people.
I would simply not fed post on Al gores internet ….
No offense but some might look at telling people not to dox ice agents as fed posting. I do not think you are a fed! To be clear.
More don’t post about going to federal agents homes to commit crimes in a way that can be brought to later in a court of law …. Like use signal … or something secure.
Muting these because people can’t have a level headed discussion about social media moderation and want to fed post with emotional catharsis… which is far more likely to get one’s self in a whole heap of legal trouble than liberate anyone.
signal is not secure lol
how is that fedposting 😭😂
to be clear, i agree that karma is generally a good thing
Shut up. Just shut up. Go back to Reddit.
Seems pretty clear I think most people here are telling you they don’t find it categorically inappropriate. Personally, I like it when good things happen to good people, and bad things happen to bad people.
Except. These aren't home addresses. They are work addresses for government employees.
Did I miss that Chicago DSA was kidnapping people off the street and filling up concentration camps?
Like yeah ICE needs to be brought to justice thought congressional investigations and lawsuits but not through vigilante violence especially if you want actual system change and not just leaving burning dog shit on a few cops door steps which for the record is very dumb in an era of Flock and ring
cameras. And i certainly would go around posting about it.
Either you think doxing is categorically inappropriate and dangerous and very bad business or you don’t I’m not telling you what to think just explaining the logic behind such a decision. Christ.
It's not "doxxing" to reveal the identities of public employees or to document evidence of their crimes, which remain unprosecuted.
I don't think anything is categorically anything. neither do you and neither do the bsky staff
"Unmasking murderous armed agents of a fascist state is the same as if fascists doxxed the DSA! I am very smart!"
This is deeply embarrassing.
Begging you to reevaluate the choices that brought you to this point.
You’re right, the people ruining other people’s family lives have the right to a peaceful family life
This isn’t doxxing. That’s a very silly thing to say
Except Bluesky has no such policy. You are allowed to doxx trans people on this platform as much as you want. You just can't doxx fascists or certain other protected groups (like Will Stancil's clique).
You don't need to invent hypotheticals, they already don't block Kiwifarms.
That’s bullshit, as is the notion of ideological neutrality per se. The idea (sic!) that doxxing should be considered bad in all cases is ideology itself.
Information about the secret Nazi stormtrooper force is not the same thing as DSA members
This is performative nonsense. 🙄
Also @safety.bsky.app was probably involved in the decision.
I’m sorry to see you go, Chad. You’re a strong voice of reason here, where reason is often lost.
I can see the link from Germany. Maybe it is only the freedom of beepland (USA) we can see here.
We can see it, but trying to opening the exact dataset link opens a modal instead.
This bums me out. Them capitulating in advance makes people feel less safe, it cools online participation. Which feeds current day fascism, because we use social media to coordinate, communicate, educate and plan. Sure it’s safer to only coordinate locally, but we’ve seen how revolutionary it can be
Plus I’ve followed Chad for like 5+ years now? On the ground reporting is sparse. I’m really fucking bummed.
I can’t decide if this is the right decision or not. On one hand, ICE is despicable and putting its agents is good. On the other hand, not all DHS employees work for ICE and some have jobs that put their safety - and their family - at risk.
what, you're too lazy to cut and paste?
My understanding is that these people's information provided was their work info. FlokiNET’s CEO, Kolja Weber, told Reuters that his company would not remove the DHS data because it included government employee work addresses and work phone numbers, not personal phone numbers and addresses.
its not showing as malicious in australia
archive.li/G6u70it works in spain too
Nor UK
Yeh, looks like it's only blocked in the US? Both links work for me.
(Of course, it's still bullshit capitulation in advance because bluesky doesn't publish original content and sec230 and etc etc)
I can see it too. Maybe it's blocked in the US only?
Confirmed i can see it in the UK
Working in California as of right now
I just loaded it without a problem from Brooklyn. Bsky may have changed course on this.
I can see in Pennsylvania, not sure if they removed the block recently.
This link is working for me in the US.
this link is absolutely blocked
Bsky has been added to the "collaborators" moderation list.
ACAB includes Bluesky.
Periodic reminder you can move to BlackSky (they have 2 open to anyone servers) or NorthSky and you don’t lose anything. All your follows and followers and posts come along. The bad moderators can’t get you there.
Is there somewhere else we can follow you?
Yeah CX is Christmas Island. Never saw that before.
I watched twitter go back and forth on whether leaked data was a problem or not for over a decade and a half and Bluesky has just come in with what looks like an ad hoc, knee jerk enforcement of vague community rules here.
